For reasons that I don’t want to talk about, I could use a distraction.

So here it goes: If I’m not mistaken, Opponauts and Jalops alike agree that this

Kinja'd!!!

...despite being so totally

Kinja'd!!!

(I *heart* this couple!)

...is considered BEIGE, right? Yes, the beige that we all try to avoid and are the butt of our jokes, but we know damn well that they great, reliable cars for the masses. Even for Opponauts and Jalops.

Because let’s be honest: sh*t happens. Life happens. WANTS have to be set aside because NEEDS are dictated by the pocketbook and/or family.

So even though we WANT (or can even afford) this

Kinja'd!!!

...this

Kinja'd!!!

[please note: it’s not leaving your local cars & coffee...yet]

...or this

Kinja'd!!!

...reality dictates we NEED this

Kinja'd!!!

...this

Kinja'd!!!

...and/or this

Kinja'd!!!

Yet we still try our damnedest to avoid the beige. Well, at least as much as our bank accounts allow us to do so.

So what do I think is NOT beige?

Well, I think pure EV’s are not beige. So cars like this

Kinja'd!!!

...and even lowly options like this

Kinja'd!!!

...are not beige. Why? Because all electric motoring. Because eco-friendly.

Because of this badass mamajamma right here!

Kinja'd!!!

( of course, the carbon footprint created by generating the electricity via coal ..er, um...that’s a discussion for another day, mmmkay?)

Anyway, I think diesels are not beige. Because advanced technologies allow oil burners to perform just as well as its gas counterparts. And an added bonus is that as the odometer rises, the fuel economy improves. So cars like this

Kinja'd!!!

(with bonus plug-in hybrid)

...this

Kinja'd!!!

...and this

Kinja'd!!!

...are cool with me.

It’s just too bad that a certain [please note: an inappropriate, insulting joke about Volkswagen that would have appeared right here has been purposely removed by the author. Because TGIF and no one deserves to be unintentionally and/or indirectly offended today. In lieu of said joke, F.U., Volkswagen AG!!!].

Lastly, I think SOME hybrids are not beige. Why SOME? Well because some hybrids use a regular, OG, automatic transmission, instead of a lifeless, whiny CVT. Hell, I think all CVT equipped cars are BEIGE because of the constant engine drone — seriously, it’s like a dentist’s drill ALL THE TIME. Say, remember when Ballaban had a WRX with a CVT to test? Yuck.

http://jalopnik.com/the-2015-subar…

(Thanks for taking one for the team, Mike).

I digress. So none of this

Kinja'd!!!

[ESPECIALLY IF THE DRIVER OF ONE INSIST ON DRIVING UNDER THE SPEED LIMIT IN THE PASSING LANE —you folks are just as bad as dude bro Mustang owners leaving a local Cars & Coffee and asshat motorcyclists thinking the world revolves around you and if we don’t like it, you and your bros will rip our side mirrors off and gang up and attack folks unprovoked. Stop making good people look bad! .../rant.]

...and more this

Kinja'd!!!

...and its twin

Kinja'd!!!

But what say you, folks? What do you consider beige or not beige?

Not Beige. And thinking you always have to go beige based on “needs” is what causes car companies to build more boring, beige cars. Break free from the mold.

Should Hybrids have images of baby seals being clubbed if they ever go into the left lane? I think so....

*That should distract you for a moment*

I tend to think that you can pretty much always avoid a beige car, if you’re into that kind of thing. But anyone who thinks that the Camry is an inherently bad car is lying to themselves. They’re great for most people.

I have seen many people try to accomplish everything they want in a single car and I laugh because its fucking stupid. Own two cars. One fun, one not. Obvious.

The cost of a used minivan and a used Miata combined are far cheaper than that Volvo hybrid you seem to like. For the record, I own 5 cars and a motorcycle and the combined value is less than $50k.

I kinda do, also.

And I think one of the C/D writers had gotten one for his wife...I’ll look it up later.

I do believe that I pointed that out already. Camrys aren’t one of the top selling cars for nothing.

full disclosure: several years ago, I was this close to buying a Camry sedan w/ a 3L V6 and a MANUAL!

Hahaha I respect anyone who gets a beige manual sedan and then options it in top trim with a manual because I imagine it'd be brutal to resell.

dude, do you even think, bro!?

while the cars I listed I do like, they are just here for general reprentation.

why would you think that everyone’s life is/should be like yours? I think it’s great that you have this type of flexibility to have 5 vehicles. Not everyone has that ability to pay PROPER insurance on more than one vehicle, let alone have a place they can afford to house more than one vehicle for just their self.

it was soooo bland and basic inside (I think it was the “CE” trim package).

...probably should have bought it because I’m sure it would still purr like a kitty today

Thanks for reminding me that the outgoing Optima Hybrid looks really fucking good, especially dat booty.

Long live the midsize sedan. Long live automatic transmissions. Long live hybrids. Because, fuck it, they make life easier. And they can still be pretty fun too.

damn shame that the first gen Honda Insight was the only hybrid that I know that you could get a manual with

I believe you could also get a Civic Hyrbid with a manual, for the first and possibly even the second gen.

I think an Oppo actually owns one with a stick too.
